I knew the funnel would do the trick. I hope your stomach “bug” isn’t really from digesting fruit fly eggs. But if it is, I’m sure we’ll get an entertaining follow up post on it.

The fly paper does work – but what you have to do is swat them around the fly strips so they fly into the paper (I also had maybe 4 or 6 up) so they get stuck to it. You can’t just hang up the fly paper and walk away. Maybe the fruit flies in SF are not as smart as the ones in UT but it sure worked here!

Good luck… seeing as how fruit flies just spontaneously combust.
But if they don’t… I read online that you can put mashed fruit in a bowl, pour apple cider vinegar on it, cover it with saran wrap and poke holes in it. The fruit flies fly in through the holes, but can’t get out. I’ve also heard of putting a mixture of cider vinegar and dish soap in a jar. I’ve never tried these myself, but they sound like fun things to have around your house.
When your’e done, you could make a science project poster and give a presenation for us.

p.p.s. you should take the cup of fruit flies and release them in the home of those who gave you the tomatoes. 🙂

Klarissa – We didn’t try swatting the flies into the tape. Maybe that was our problem.

Gina – So many good ideas in your comments…

Apple cider vinegar…works like a charm. Leave it out in an open container, and soon you’ll be free! 🙂

And the saran wrap with holes helps a lot over it! 🙂

I loved Gina’s comment that you should release your cup of fruit flies and release them in the home of those who gave you the tomatoes. Funny stuff!!!

I hope your infestation is taken care of before I come to take care of your children…
